Edmonton: the capital of Alberta, one of Canada’s sunniest cities, and one of the best places to be in the winter. Edmonton is a great place to be any time of the year, with a fast-growing population and tons to do all the time. But in the winter, Edmonton knows how to make the most of the cold, with many fun activities lined up. Edmonton River Valley Parks are a year-round spot and have more than 160 km of paths, and is comprised of 20 large parks. That’s 22 times bigger than New York’s Central Park! There are winter hikes, skating, and beautiful walks in the city. This winter, why not try something new?
If you like hiking in the summer, you’ll love snowshoeing in the winter. Snowshoes are footwear that have a wide base, much larger than regular shoes. This disperses the weight across the snow, making it easier to walk without sinking into the snow. It’s a great way to hike and explore in the winter. There are many places to rent snowshoes in Edmonton, but a great option for someone new to snowshoeing is to go on a tour. Haskin Canoe offers tours in the day, evening, or night through various parks in Edmonton. The tours are around 1-2 hours and you can either choose from a scheduled guided tour or a private group tour. Regularly scheduled tours go from Hawrelak Park, Edmonton River Valley Parks, Islet Lake Park, or Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park, but make sure to book your spot in advance!
Most people think of Segway tours tied exclusively to the summer- but in Edmonton, Segways are a winter activity too! River Valley Adventure Co. has an Edmonton Beginner Winter Segway Trek, an hour to hour and a half long tour that takes you through the River Valley Parks. Don’t worry if you haven’t been on a Segway before, the first part of the tour is training from a certified guide and will have you up and ready in no time.
CROSS COUNTRY SKIING
A classic form of winter exercise is cross-country skiing. It’s a full-body workout where you can glide across the snow and enjoy the nature around you. In the River Valley, there are 8 main cross-country ski trails to follow. Some trails have night skiing, warm up shelters, parking, and varying difficulty levels. There ae also options for lessons if you’re a beginner.
While you’re enjoying the winter activities in Edmonton, stop in at the Days Inn Edmonton South. With comfortable accommodation and complimentary breakfast, the Days Inn Edmonton South is the perfect home base for your stay.
