What’s fun, educational, and has sights from around the world all without leaving the city of Edmonton? It not a streaming service - it’s the zoo! The Edmonton Valley Zoo has opened their doors for outdoor experiences again, and its sure to be a hit for everyone. The Edmonton Valley Zoo is located on the North Saskatchewan River in the River valley, and it is home to over 350 animals. It is a small and intimate zoo that focuses on plenty of opportunities for animal interactions. It’s a great activity to get outside and have a fun-filled day- especially now that the weather is warming up again for spring.

ABOUT THE ZOO

The zoo originally opened in 1959 and has gone through frequent construction as it grows and changes with the times and the influx of new animals. The Edmonton Valley Zoo has a strong focus on conservation and environmental sustainability. The zoo’s cornerstone values are stewardship, conservation, education, and engagement, and they display these qualities by creating an educating and engaging experience for all visitors.

WHAT TO SEE

The zoo is comprised of multiple exhibits including the Inner Zoo - which is the original portion of the zoo from when it first opened, the Makira Outpost -where the lemurs live, Saito Centre - where the nocturnal animals are, and Birds of Prey exhibit. It’s in the exhibits where visitors will find all sorts of exciting animals like seals, elephants, zebras, red pandas, arctic foxes and so many more, and visitors can even get right up close and personal with many of them.

HOW TO VISIT

The zoo is now open with measures that will ensure everyone who steps in is fun & safe. Outdoor areas are open, and some indoor area have one way paths to access. In order to visit the zoo at this time, visitors must pre-book their tickets in advance to select a timed slot, arrive early, wear a mask, and must maintain distancing while on the premises. Between all the animal exhibits, pop into the Zoo-tique gift shop while you’re there and get something to remember the day by!
